Post-adoption

The ESWS has been placing approximately 45,000 children
into loving families both in Korea and overseas

As adoptees grow older, they have increased need to learn about their background and birth identity, and consequently more and more overseas adoptees has been coming back to Korea to search and reunite with their birth families, and learn the culture of their motherland since year 1980s.

To facilitate the search, reunion, and the visit to Korea, the ESWS has opened the Post Adoption Service Center in March 2008 to provide more efficient and systematic service for adoptees and their families.

What are Post-Adoptive services?

We aim to provide adoptees, adoptive families, and birth families with assistance after their initial adoption at ESWS and these include: search for birth families, exchange and translation of letters, file review and language assistance during reunion meeting. We assist in providing documentation and information regarding the adoption at ESWS and also service adoptees/adoptive families with the reunion with their foster families. It is our goal to provide all our services in a professional and confidential manner with the hope that understanding of their adoption at ESWS and their Korean heritage would help build a healthier identity of themselves.

- Counseling

For adoptees and adoptive families, we provide confidential counseling regarding any issues or concerns after their adoption at ESWS, and for overseas adoption, this can be requested through the counterpart agencies that serviced the adoption process itself.
For birth families or any person involved in the adoption process whom we identify as birth family members in the file, ESWS provides confidential counseling as well.

- Assistance with exchange of letters/photos and translation

The exchange of letters and photos between the adoptees/adoptive families and birth/ foster families is only possible with the consent of all parties involved.
The direct exchange of letters and photos is possible when the parties involved are in agreement and can communicate without the support by ESWS including language assistance.

- Assistance with homeland visits

When organizing either personal or group homeland visits, please contact your local agency to request post adoption services including: meeting with foster family, search for birth family and place, language assistance, counseling before and after the reunion, reviewing of file…etc. In accordance with our policy, services for birth search and viewing of the file are provided for adoptees over the age of thirteen.
To help create positive and memorable experience during the homeland visit, ESWS are happy to support the adoptees/adoptive families with the planning and organizing of their trip to Korea.

- Assistance with issuance and certification of documents

We provide Adoption Certificate that is required when applying for the F-4 visa and dual-citizenship.

- Assistance with the cancellation of Korean Citizenship

Once the adoptee's acquisition of nationality in the adopted country has been confirmed and our office receives the appropriate papers, we can arrange for cancellation of Korean citizenship in accordance with the Korean law.

- Support for adoptees' groups

It is also our aim to support seminars and events that are coordinated by various adoptees' groups and organization in the hope of promoting the welfare of adoptees' community.
